Have you ever wondered how there can be two people with similar skill sets yet one can excel at a task while another barely scrapes by? Many would say that such a difference could be attributed to the meaning behind the old saying “attitude is everything.”
So, is there any validity to that thought? The short answer is, yes, there is. While you cannot control every circumstance by having the right attitude, you can control a portion of what happens. You can also have a big impact on what you are able to accomplish.
There is no doubt that your success is tied to your attitude. Of course, saying that attitude is everything is a bit off. You will still have to work hard, and you’ll still need to do all of the leg work required to meet your goal. However, having the right attitude will make reaching those goals much more realistic.
Here are some tips for getting your attitude into the right place.
Cast Out Negativity
The first thing you must do is cast out negativity. It would be great if you could get rid of ALL of the negativity around you, but that’s not possible. You have no control over others, but you can control your own attitude. You have to make a conscious choice that you will not allow negative thoughts to continue.
That doesn’t mean that such thoughts won’t pop up, but you have to take control over them and immediately replace them with positive thinking.
One of the best ways to improve your own attitude is to work on being compassionate towards others. When you search your heart for compassion, it is really hard to walk around with a negative attitude.
Take some time to give of yourself. Volunteer to tutor at-risk children, serve dinner at a soup kitchen or teach job skills to residents of a battered women shelter. When you give of yourself in these ways, a positive attitude is a happy side effect.
Surround Yourself with What You Want
If you want to have a more positive attitude, then you need to surround yourself with positive people. It is much more difficult to stay positive when everyone around you is whining and complaining. Of course you cannot eliminate every negative person around you, but you can try to limit your interactions with them.
Learn to Believe in Yourself
Admittedly, that sounds a little cheesy, but it is true. You have to learn to build your own self-confidence to the point that you really believe in your own worth and value. For some, this is the most difficult part of having the right attitude.
Try learning a new skill, joining a club or volunteering in some capacity. All are great ways to boost your self-confidence and, therefore, improve your attitude.
It is a bit of an overstatement to say attitude is everything. But you should never underestimate the power of having the right attitude. You can not only have a positive impact on your own life, but you can also make a difference in the lives of the people you come in contact with every day.
Start working to improve your attitude today. If it seems overwhelming, just make one small change a day to your thinking. Before you know it, you’ll have a positive attitude and all of the benefits that go along with it.
